In this game, card values are a bit different than they are in traditional poker, with numbers rather than suits. Jack is counted for 11, Queen for 12, King for 13 and Ace for 14. A spread is essentially the distance between two cards, which is the amount of cards that could lie between these cards.

Red Dog Rules

While Red Dog may seem complicated at first, this poker version is actually very easy to play once you understand the rules. Rules for the game include the following:

• Once bets have been made, you will get two cards placed face up.
• The number value of these cards will be used to determine the spread.
• The spread is the number of cards that fit between the two dealt cards. (E.g. If a 5 and a Queen are dealt, the spread would be 6, as 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and Jack could all fit between the 5 and the Queen)
• The object of the game is to bet on whether the next dealt card will be among the cards that fit into the spread.
• Bets may be Raised (doubled) or Called (left as is) but not removed once initial bets have been placed. 
• If the two cards are consecutive (such as a 4 and a 5 for example) then the hand is a push as there is no spread, and bets are returned.
• If the third card dealt is within the spread, you win – if it matches one of the initial two cards or it is outside the spread, you lose.
